Elephant herd crossing grassland in Udawalawe National Park

Elephants, guaranteed

Udawalawe

Around 600 elephants on open grassland, so you will see them, whatever the season.

Udawalawe is the park for elephants. The open savannah around the reservoir means sightings are near-certain year round, and the Elephant Transit Home nearby rehabilitates orphaned calves for release back into the wild. It sits between the hill country and the south coast, so it fits most routes.

What we do here

  • Half-day jeep safari
  • Elephant Transit Home feeding time
  • Bird watching at the reservoir edge

Worth knowing

  • The park is 308 km² with an estimated 600 to 700 elephants
  • Elephant Transit Home feeds the calves at 9 am, 12 pm, 3 pm and 6 pm
  • Water buffalo, crocodiles and over 180 bird species live around the reservoir
