Tea pluckers on a hillside tea estate near Nuwara Eliya in morning mist

Little England at 1,900 metres

Nuwara Eliya

Tea estates, a 1930s golf course, log fires, and World's End at Horton Plains.

The British built a hill station here to escape the heat and it still has a race course, a golf club and Tudor-style hotels. The real draw is the tea: rolling estates in every direction, and Horton Plains a short drive away, where the plateau ends in a sheer 880-metre drop called World's End.

What we do here

  • Horton Plains and World's End walk
  • Tea factory tour and plucking with the estate workers
  • Gregory Lake and the Victoria Park
  • Scenic train to Ella from Nanu Oya

Worth knowing

  • At 1,868 metres it is the highest town in Sri Lanka; nights drop to 8 to 10 °C
  • Horton Plains is a UNESCO site as part of the Central Highlands
  • The World's End loop is a 9 km walk; go before 9 am before cloud fills the valley
  • Pedro and Damro tea estates run factory tours most days
